The goal of the NIST Cyber Security Framework is to give organizations a sense of direction when it comes to determining cybersecurity practices, programs, and plans. Now more than ever it is important that organizations ensure they are protected from threats, as well as have a plan of action in the case that these threats come to fruition. The NIST has five core functions that it is built on which are identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover. Identify is basically an understanding of how to manage cybersecurity risks, protect are the safeguards necessary to deter cybersecurity threats, and detect is to continuously monitor for events. Finally, respond are the incident-response activities an organization should take, and recover are the continuity plans to recover after a cyber-breach.
